MP3 or WAV — which should you use?
WAV is uncompressed audio: every sample is stored exactly as recorded, which is why it is the working format in studios and audio editors. The cost is size — a WAV file is roughly ten times larger than the same audio in MP3. MP3 is compressed for portability: it plays everywhere, streams smoothly, and takes a fraction of the storage.
The usual workflow is to record and edit in WAV, then convert to MP3 for distribution. Converting in that direction loses a bit of top-end detail — imperceptible on most speakers and headphones — while converting MP3 to WAV does not restore quality, it only unpacks the same audio into a bigger file.
