Everything else comes through as paragraphs in approximate top-to-bottom reading order. Multi-column layouts, sidebars, and other exotic designs aren't column-aware — they degrade to one linear stream per page, an honest trade-off rather than pixel-perfect reconstruction, so expect to reflow those manually. Scanned or image-only PDFs are detected automatically and OCR'd via Google Cloud Vision (the first 20 pages of a scan; pages beyond that aren't recognized) — no separate OCR step needed.

The OCR fallback covers the first 20 pages of a scanned document; pages beyond that aren't recognized. Digital PDFs with a real text layer never take this path.
Are my files kept private? Uploads travel over HTTPS, land in a locked-down storage bucket, and are auto-deleted within an hour. Conversion runs in an isolated worker process — nobody on the team can browse uploaded files.
