Why convert GIF to PNG?

What you should know

If your GIF is animated, the PNG will be the first frame only. Standard PNG doesn't support animation. (APNG does, but it's a niche format with limited support.)

PNG files are typically larger than GIF for flat-color images. For photographs, PNG is usually smaller and looks much better.

How it works

  1. Open the converter. Go to the Formatly converter — no signup required.
  2. Drop your GIF files. Drag and drop one or more GIFs into the upload box (up to five files, 20 MB each).
  3. Choose PNG as the output. Pick PNG from the dropdown. Animated GIFs collapse to the first frame; you keep the full 24-bit color range and 8-bit alpha transparency PNG offers.
  4. Convert and download. Click Convert; download links appear for each PNG as it finishes, usually within a few seconds. Output is lossless and watermark-free.

FAQ

Does converting GIF to PNG preserve transparency? Yes. GIF only supports one-bit on/off transparency, while PNG supports a full 8-bit alpha channel. Existing transparent pixels in the GIF will stay transparent, and the result will composite cleanly over any background — without the ragged single-pixel edges GIFs are known for.

Will an animated GIF stay animated as a PNG? No. Standard PNG is single-frame, so the converter outputs the first frame of the GIF only. APNG (animated PNG) exists but has limited browser and tool support; for animation, stay in GIF or convert to animated WebP or MP4.

Will the PNG file be larger than the original GIF? For flat-color graphics, logos, and pixel art, yes — usually 1.5 to 3 times larger, because PNG records every pixel at full color depth while GIF only stores a 256-color palette. For photographic content or anything with smooth gradients, PNG is typically smaller and looks much better.

Why convert GIF to PNG at all? Three main reasons: cleaner transparency (alpha vs on/off), the full 24-bit color range instead of GIF's 256-color cap, and editability in modern design tools (Figma, Photoshop, Sketch) where PNG is the de facto standard. PNG also avoids the dithering artifacts you see in detailed GIFs.

Is the GIF to PNG converter free? Yes. No signup, no watermark, no payment. Up to five files per upload with a 20 MB ceiling on each, free for personal and commercial use.
